Retire to Panama

Panama is a country that is only now emerging from "below the radar" of public attention. Most people when asked about Panama recoil with a stressed look on their face and comments following about "drug lords, and militarists". The facts are; Panama is a very modern gem in Latin America, where "westerners" are welcomed with open arms.
Ever since the US military went into Panama in the night, to remove General Noriega, back in 1992, there has been a resurgence of Panamanian democracy. Three elections have delivered three successive Presidents, and a strong movement to reform land holdings, health and other social issues to the benefit of the poorer strata of the country.

The effect is a country that is very modern, some of the best infrastructure in all of Latin America, complete with one of the very best retirement or lifestyle change regimes in the world, banking privacy and no income tax. Couple that with the fact that there is no military in the country, that they use the US dollar as the medium of exchange, that there are modern medical facilities, clean air and water, and cheap property, makes it a very attractive location for the Canadian looking for a way to stretch his resources.
But since we're talking about Canadians, let me remind you that on top of all the benefits I mentioned already, you shouldn't forget that it never gets cold. They never see snow, nor could you slip on a side walk on the ice.
Panama

During a recent trip to Panama, I was able to meet the actual man on whom the book, "The Tailor of Panama", was loosely based. Have you seem the film, staring Pierce Brosnan? It was filmed in Panama, and is a fun entertainment for an hour or so as it shows landmarks of the country very well. The point is however that I met the "Tailor of Panama", and was able to buy a great Italian wool suit, made just for me, for a very fair price. Again, people are very friendly and keen to help.

As a person looking for a place to retire, Panama is very attractive. As a "pensionado", the word used to describe a retired person, you receive an identity card and will receive a discount of 25% on everything from airfare to dentist visits.
